Research Studies meeting 3
Date:2nd May 2006
Time: 1. 50p.m.
Venue: Kitchen 1
Present: Celestine, Yvonne, Huiling and Miss Chionh
Absent with apologies: Rachel (had to attend Geography make-up lesson)
1.
Contacts
1. Miss Chionh said that we have to give her a copy of agenda before any research studies meeting.
- We can email the soft copy to her
- We can put the hard copy in her locker
2.
Portfolio
1. Miss Chionh gave us an example of her Sec 4 students’ portfolio. The portfolio:
- should have a content page to organize the information correctly
- have your agenda, minutes, drafts, proposal, interviews, surveys and comments
- should have the date clearly named on every piece of work we put in the portfolio
2. Miss Chionh suggested us having a timeline of what we are going to do until the end of the year
3. Miss Chionh informed us of the format of which we should type minutes:
- General topic and branched out to 1.1, 1.2, 1.3
- To end the meeting with ‘With no other matter arising, the RS consultation ended at..’
- To name who typed the minutes and who confirmed them
3.
Title of our RS project
1. Miss Chionh suggested alternatives to our title
- She suggested that we could put 11pm curfew in inverted commas
- We should improve on our title and get a clearer idea of what we are doing. Are we doing on just opinions and alternatives from students and parents? Or can we have a solution to it and investigate the curfew further?
- Consequences of teens staying out late – why the police force is so concerned? Juvenile crime rate increases
- How teens staying out late can affect the society
- We can do research on the net on the crimes teens that stay out late do
- To look at two sides of the curfew – for and against the curfew
4.
Presentation of the Sec 4s
1. Questions and answers – the judges will flood the students with many questions and so we have to be very prepared
2. Group members have only 5mins to talk – have to organize your time properly- if u exceed the time limit, your marks will be deducted
3. Presentation of our RS project will be done sometime end of the year
5.
Allocation of work
1. We have to have a work breakdown to allocate the work of each group members. We need to have duties such as taking down the minutes, writing the reflections and if necessary, posing questions for the survey
With no other matters arising, the meeting ended at 2.40pm.
Minutes typed by Celestine Lim.
Confirmed by :
Chow Hui Ling (the
UNFORTUNATE Group Leader)
PS. well done Celestine ^^

Reflections of research studies discussion today
Today, everyone was present. We met at about 1.40 pm and waited for our teacher-mentor, but could not find her. In the end, we decided to go the canteen and have a bite during our discussion.
The discussion today was very fruitful as we finalized everything. Firstly, we have decided on our title of our research studies topic. We thought of many other ideas, such as Ideas regarding the 11 pm curfew on teens. However, we felt that it was quite brier and probably too shallow. So after much brainstorming, we decided on
. Then after that, we carried on to the formal email that we were urged by the teacher to have last week. We have already created one which is rgs_research_studies@hotmail.com and have already started activating it. We have decided to organize ourselves so that our works can be easier. Any document that we want to hand up to the teachers, we can send it to the email so that all of the group members can edit.
Next, we allocated the work, on which survey questions we are supposed to do. Two of us are doing MCQ while the other two are doing open-ended questions. We have also set a deadline, which is this coming Friday. We hope that everything can go as smoothly as we had planned. And the more specific details are included in the minutes.
In conclusion, all of us kind of finalized our plan on our topic and our plans. It also pays to be organized, now that we have planned everything properly, our work will be much easier.
The meeting adjourned at about 3.05 pm.
